It’s been four years since the Chromecast with Google TV launched, and it’s starting to lag behind the best streaming devices. However, Google has a plan: a new Google TV streamer is on the way. Leaked images indicate it will look quite different, dropping the Chromecast branding and taking the form of a wedge-like box instead of a dongle. Recently leaked specifications provide further details on its capabilities.
The leaked specifications, provided by 9to5Google, reveal that the new Google TV streamer will feature Thread radio support, similar to what is coming to the Google Pixel 9 phones. This means the streamer will be able to connect directly with Thread-compatible smart home devices without needing a separate hub. For instance, you could control your smart home equipment using voice commands via the streamer’s remote
Google TV Streamer: Key Specifications and Features
We don’t yet have details on the other specifications, but it’s highly likely that the new model will include upgrades to the processor, memory, and storage. The current 4K Chromecast with Google TV uses an Amlogic S905X3 CPU, based on the ARM Cortex-A55, with 2GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. As noted before, the 8GB of storage can quickly become insufficient as apps are installed, which has been a frequent complaint among users of the current model.
These specifications come from FCC filings, not directly from Google, but rather from Quanta Computer. Quanta has previously manufactured Google hardware, including the Pixel Slate, Pixelbook Go, and Pixelbook.
While there hasn’t been an official announcement for the new Google TV Streamer, it’s widely speculated that it may be unveiled at Google’s event on August 13. This event is also expected to showcase the Google Pixel 9 Pro, and the streamer might make its debut alongside it.
